Some things in this life you will never be able to fully explain. Psalm 131 doesn't pretend otherwise — it ends by naming that mystery, then giving one command in response.

God sees all of time laid out before him. Every moment all at once. That's not something any of us can truly wrap our minds around. In Psalm 31 ends staring straight into that mystery. David says in Psalm 131, "My eyes are not raised too high that he doesn't occupy himself with things too great and too marvelous for him." What this tells us is there are mysteries reserved for God alone.

God is all powerful. He's everywhere all at once. And God's very nature is supposed to leave us aruck and amazed at just how awesome God is. There are things in this life I can't fully explain. I can tell you that natural disasters are the result of the fall, that sin touched even creation itself, but I can't tell you exactly how God is going to use each disaster ultimately for good.

But I know he is. I can tell you that our bodies ache and we hurt because we're still waiting for our perfect ones. But I can't fully describe and explain every suffering we go through. But I know God's using it to grow our faith and to remind us this earth is not our final home. That we have a citizenship in heaven and to trust him. That's what it means in Psalm 131 when David says he is like a weaned child.

It's saying, "God, I don't have to understand everything, but I'm not going to let the ugliness of this world unsettle me. I just want to be with you, my rock, because I know with you, God, I will find satisfaction." Jesus said, "Unless you have the faith of a child, you'll never enter into the kingdom of heaven." We have to trust God's instructions, even when we don't understand, and follow him anyway.

That's why the psalm ends with a command and not a suggestion. Put your hope in the Lord. Israel had plenty of reasons from the world to not trust God. But they had one reason from God himself to why they could trust him. God himself said, "You are my people and I will take care of you." And it's the same for Christians. We can come up with a hundred reasons to not trust God, but once you're his child, he promises one thing that outweighs them all.

He will never leave you nor forsake you. So learn to be still. Like David learned to wean his soul. Let your soul become like that wean child, not anxious, not demanding its own way, but that just wants to be near the father and experience true rest. Because God the Father promises to take care of
