Most people use the word conviction to mean feeling guilty, but that's not what the word means at all. Welcome to Christianese, where we define church words simply. Jesus uses the word conviction in John 16:8 when He says the Holy Spirit will convict the world of sin. Sounds like guilt, right? Well, kinda. Conviction simply means knowledge of the truth. It's bringing to light something that was once unknown.

When God reveals something to you through the Bible or through the Holy Spirit, that is being convicted. It has nothing to do with how you feel, In the Bible, James actually presents that knowledge comes before emotion. The Holy Spirit reveals truth and then your laughter turns to mourning, your joy turns to gloom. So the next time you hear someone say, "I don't feel convicted about that," ask them, do they know what is right and what is wrong? Because that is conviction. And scripture says to know what is right and not to do it is sin.
